Community Over Competition, Wedding Photography Edition

WEDDING VENDORS UNITE

The phrase community over competition is heard often within my circles. It is the primary focus that we all value each other, instead of seeing each other as competition.

Ready to Compete?

Whether you are trying to bake the best tasting cookies for Christmas, or trying to one up someone for that promotion at work - our world involves a lot of competition. But does it really need to? Don't get me wrong - there is a time and place for competition, I am not saying everyone should get a participation award. But I am saying that when it comes to small business owners - why do we feel the need to compete with one another within the same industry?

Build up Community

Working in the wedding industry is not an easy task, for any vendor. But surrounding yourself with fellow business owners that want to see you win, well that makes it easier. For photography specifically - each photographer has their own skill, gear, style, and personality. A little secret, each couple has their own style as well. There is truly no need to compete with other photographers when our primary goal should remain the same - giving the couple the best wedding experience possible. If a couple would decide that I am not the best fit for them, I can give them a list of five other professional photographers ranging in price that I know are reliable, skilled, and would better fit their needs.

How to Support Other Vendors

In the wedding industry I come across A LOT of vendors. Working with them first hand I can give experiences and recommendations to future/current clients. From social media shares to a preferred vendors list, I am grateful to know multiple skilled and reliable vendors that deserve the business. Within my wedding packet includes a list of vendors I recommend, that are located in a variety of areas and also travel frequently.

Leave the Rivalry Behind

Remember to be true to yourself in your business, and everything will fall into place. Just make sure you aren't stepping on toes to get ahead, we can all get there together. "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves." - Philippians 2:3
